problems

Background:
The class is called "Basic ESL". There are only 4 students. Two of the students are at the early emergent stage and have been in the US for less than a year. The other 2 students are at an intermediate level and have been in the US for about 3 years; one of the two is on an IEP.

Problem:
The student who is on the IEP tends to be very disruptive in class. He will ask questions and say things that are completely off the subject. This gets the class off the subject. He will also continue to speak in Spanish even after being directly told to speak in English.

Textbook evaluation

Today I learned that I do NOT have to follow the adopted book exactly, chapter by chapter, and I do NOT have to finish the entire book. How wonderful! I can pull from a variety of sources that will help the students to meet the program curriculum goals. I can actually hope to have a dynamic and engaing classroom.
